Mayor Seems To Contradict Gov. Brewer's Story On Obama Run-In

President Obama didn’t exactly walk away from Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer (R) during their disagreement on Wednesday on an airport tarmac near Phoenix, said one of the only people to witness the exchange up close. The president simply began talking to the other two elected officials who were there to greet him.

the mayor said he was standing right next to the governor when the exchange took place and Obama didn’t seem to be in any kind of hurry to leave.

“There was no sense that he was running to or from anything,” Smith told TPM. In fact, he said, the president stayed and had a pleasant conversation with Smith, who’s a Republican, and Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton, a Democrat.

he portrayal of a calm, friendly president seems to at least partly contradict what Brewer has said about the encounter in numerous interviews since Wednesday afternoon. She described the president as “tense” and said he walked away from her while she was in mid-sentence. She told a Phoenix television station she felt “a little bit threatened”

I've said before, but let me repeat; if it's a republican, and their mouth is moving, they are lying! The mayor's account seem more in line with a dignified man like Obama, when dealing with uncouth Jan.

Being bombastic is a republican trait, with name calling, lies and inuindo, distractions and fake happy patriotic bs about freedom and liberty! It's a symptom of insecurity,Bullies do it all the time...

Brewer sticks her finger in the President of the United States, like a petty child, and then screams he seemed threatening to her? Way to pump up the book sales, every Tpub hater of the President will rush out and buy her book looking for more hateful tales to tell their friends. And of course, the sales went through the roof today. Just shows how many hateful Tpubs are really out there.

#1.1- Glad you picked up on that statement. A Black man is always threatening to a white woman. This woman wanted a confrontation with the President for a photo opportunity. That is what the finger waving is all about. Gov Brewer chastised the President.... When you view the photo, who is the one appear to pose a threat? She gets in the Presidents face, waves her finger and she felt threatened? She should have been thrown down on the tarmack, handcuffed and taken to jail for posing a threat to the President of The United States of America.... I mean, the secret service failed at their job, suppose this woman has lost it and had a gun on her, she could have killed him right there. The Presidents security needs to be improved... Something like that should not happen to any President....

I'm quite confused at what point did Brewer feel threatened, was it the moment she had her decrepit finger in HIS face or the moment he WALKED AWAY from her..

Get off the booze lady...you acted terribly and anyone that was raised right would agree with that. You don't go around sticking your finger in people's face.

No it's racism. Racism isn't just people walking around in white sheets. It's not just planting burning crosses. Racism is the feeling that one is somehow superior to another based solely on race.

In Jan Brewer's case, what could possibly make it acceptable to ever do that to a President for any reason? If she is trying to sell a book, then what is the reaction she is trying to evoke? Who is she communicating with, people who like to see the office of the President of the United States disrespected? If this is the case, then there should be tons of examples of governors doing this to the President of the United States. There isn't.

While I couldn't stand GW Bush, I still respected the office. He was the President. That being said, if there was any doubt as to if it was racially motivated or not Ms. Brewer gives the us one of the most wildly used racial memes of all all time. The Caucasian woman who "feels threatened" by the mere appearance of a black man.

We can't solve problems of race in this country if we pretend it's not there.

@ kc77 -

Please understand, I'm not defending Governor Brewer in any way. She's a tool, but a smart tool. This is all about her book, not racism, and you're playing right into it. You are the one implying she "felt threatened" by a black man. By stirring the racism pot, you are fueling the racism fire. I'm not pretending racism doesn't exist, I'm just saying that by playing the racism card, you're only adding to the problem. I do also agree that her reaction and subsequent media frenzy was disrespectful to the office of the presidency regardless of who is president. If you talk to most Arizonians (and other border states), they're tired of illegal aliens crossing over the border to smuggle drugs, steal and commit violent crimes in those border regions. It's not racism. The good, law-abiding Mexican citizens that cross over into the U.S. follow the proper avenues to citizenship or obtaining a work visa.

That's the right move. Just claim racism. Just because she has a testy argument with the president, she becomes racist. Maybe, just maybe, she doesn't like him because of what he is.

Also, he is not black. He is mixed race. In fact, he is more white than black because he was raised by two white women.

My guess is that Governor Brewer just wanted a photo opportunity of her shaking her naughty-naughty-naughty finger in our esteemed President's face.

It was utterly disrespectful, and were I to be the President in that same situation, I would have had her summarily dismissed.

One would think a Governor, of all people, would have learned proper decorum prior to attaining that office.

So Obama would be classified as Caucasian? I think it's pretty well known. She doesn't have to say "I feel threatened by the black man" when we know he's mixed in racial make up and would be considered African American by most standards. We take in information with our eyes, ears and noses.

What you are doing here is precisely what I spoke of earlier and that's pretending that as long as it's not the KKK or no one is being hung by nooses, then it's not racism, which is preposterous.

You can't use lack of reasoning, or plausible deniability as an excuse. That too is as old as the sun when it comes to dealing with race in this country.

No one is denying she's trying to sell books. However, she's using this imagery to do so and that's what we also need to discuss.

I also think she wanted that image out there of pointing in his face because she fancies herself as the next Sarah Palin, a woman to run as VP to bring in the racist vote. The way she related the prior meeting with President Obama in her book also was a mischaracterization. While I've never seen President Obama speak in a "threatening" manner, I've often seen her in an ugly, shrewish manner of communication. Perhaps she's projecting a little.

I have been reading stories and watching videos of this incident; and something just kept running around in my brain (that's how my brain works). What keeps popping up in the vast regions of my brain is a story I read in high school.

Now, my years in high school span the civil right marches, the beatings and hangings of civil rights activist; the march in Selma and the buring of many churches and homes of African Americans - I even remember the KKK burning an entire town because the people just happened to a prosperous African American community. No, I'm not linking anything - don't be lazy - google - I'm sure if anyone is really interested will be able to research what I'm posting here; and if anyone can come back and dispute what I'm saying - have at it. It's all fact. This sh1t actually happened.

The story that keeps hitting me upside my brain is - To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. I'm not sure if anyone remembers the book, but I'm pretty sure everyone remember's the movie - after all Gregory Peck was the star - loved Gregory Peck. Anyway, The gist of the story - well here - left me cut and past this excerpt and link.

      To Kill a Mockingbird Summary

To Kill a Mockingbird takes place in Alabama during the Depression, and is narrated by the main character, a little girl named Jean Louise "Scout" Finch. Her father, Atticus Finch, is a lawyer with high moral standards. Scout, her brother Jem, and their friend Dill are intrigued by the local rumors about a man named Boo Radley, who lives in their neighborhood but never leaves his house. Legend has it that he once stabbed his father in the leg with a pair of scissors, and he is made out to be a kind of monster. Dill is from Mississippi but spends his summer in Maycomb at a house near the Finch's.

The children are curious to know more about Boo, and during one summer create a mini-drama they enact daily, which tells the events of his life as they know them. Slowly, the children begin moving closer to the Radley house, which is said to be haunted. They try leaving notes for Boo on his windowsill with a fishing pole, but are caught by Atticus, who firmly reprimands them for making fun of a sad man's life. Next, the children try sneaking over to the house at night and looking through its windows. Boo's brother, Nathan Radley, who lives in the house, thinks he hears a prowler and fires his gun. The children run away, but Jem loses his pants in a fence. When he returns in the middle of the night to get them back, they have been neatly folded and the tear from the fence roughly sewn up.

Other mysterious things happen to the Finch children. A certain tree near the Radley house has a hole in which little presents are often left for them, such as pennies, chewing gum, and soap carved figures of a little boy and girl who bear a striking resemblance to Scout and Jem. The children don't know where these gifts are coming from, and when they go to leave a note for the mystery giver, they find that Boo's brother has plugged up the hole with cement. The next winter brings unexpected cold and snow, and Miss Maudie's house catches on fire. While Jem and Scout, shivering, watch the blaze from near the Radley house, someone puts a blanket around Scout without her realizing it. Not until she returns home and Atticus asks her where the blanket came from does she realize that Boo Radley must have put it around her while she was entranced by watching Miss Maudie, her favorite neighbor, and her burning house.

Atticus decides to take on a case involving a black man named Tom Robinson who has been accused of raping a very poor white girl named Mayella Ewell, a member of the notorious Ewell family, who belong to the layer of Maycomb society that people refer to as "trash." The Finch family faces harsh criticism in the heavily racist Maycomb because of Atticus's decision to defend Tom. But, Atticus insists on going through with the case because his conscience could not let him do otherwise. He knows Tom is innocent, and also that he has almost no chance at being acquitted, because the white jury will never believe a black man over a white woman. Despite this, Atticus wants to reveal the truth to his fellow townspeople, expose their bigotry, and encourage them to imagine the possibility of racial equality.

Just thought I would bring a little bit of classic literature to the conversation - AND I think why this story kept hitting me - I see Jan Brewer in Alabama egging on the idea "the angry black man", the black man who has come to rape our lily white women.

Jan Brewer has gone from Dog Whistler to PIT BULL HORN and she is rallying the racist and bigots for her "pat on the back" - "way to go, Jan - you sure showed that n.gger."

So that's how I see this incident.

Raising my steaming "President Obama Birth Certificate Mug" of the most delicious blend of Hazel Nut, Chocolate and brewed Coffee and saying, " Have the most excellent of Saturday's" :o)

It also reminds me of the true story about Rosewood Florida where a White marrried woman had gotted beat by her White lover and she cried rape by a Black N ! even though they knew she was a 'Ho" , and the Black people who saw what happen told them the man was White , they killed and burned down the entire town , except for a few who could exscape!

Rosewood Case, one of the worst race riots in American history, in which hundreds of angry whites killed an undetermined number of blacks and burnt down their Florida community.

In 1922 Rosewood, Florida, was a small, predominantly black town. During the winter of 1922, two events in the vicinity of Rosewood aggravated local race relations: the murder of a white schoolteacher in nearby Perry, which led to the murder of three blacks, and a Ku Klux Klan rally in Gainesville on New Year’s Eve.

It seems like the more things change in this country - the more some "elements" want to take us back to the "good ol' days".

Arsonists torched black church after Obama's win - US news - Crime ...

Jan 19, 2012 ... Arsonists jailed for torching black church only hours after Obama's ... The last of three Massachusetts men charged in the burning of a predominantly black church to protest President Barack Obama's election was sentenced ...

Here's the thing - the Teapublicans keep saying this President ran on hope and change - THE CHANGE - well, finally we are really discussing "race and bigotry" in this country. THE HOPE - Eyes are really opening up and seeing exactly what the Teapublicans have been bringing to this conversation and FINALLY people are actually speaking out....because what we are seeing and hearing isn't just "one incident" or "one bad apple" - it's a whole freaking barrel of rotten apples and a lot of them are "elected officials".

Until the Republican party really takes a hard look at what they have unleased within their own ranks - they will continually be looked upon as RACIST AND BIGOTS.

That's strange she herself said it wasn't true.

"That was an error, if I said that," Brewer told The Associated Press on Friday. "I misspoke, but you know, let me be clear, I am concerned about the border region because it continues to be reported in Mexico that there's a lot of violence going on and we don't want that going into Arizona."

Sometimes, to maintain one's sanity in this political environment, in the face of all the adversity, it is best to have a sense of humor.

The President and the First Lady have more than proved that they are indeed a classy, intelligent, civil, and humane couple.

Neither one of them would lose their cool just to respond to an ignorant person.

I think maybe Gov. Brewer may have felt the heat of the stance of the secret service that protects the POTUS.

She was simply trying to project her fear of this into a message to her base that supports her by making them think she felt threatened by Pres. Obama.

She knows better and she is only interested in selling more of her books.

More facts have come out. In her original meeting with the President she was interviewed by the media immediately after. No mention of being disrespected, lectured, or talked down to. In fact, she specifically said that the meeting was " very cordial"and her tone was very upbeat with not a shred of evidence of a poor woman who really had a difficult meeting with the president. But...that didn't sound so hot in the book, so....she simply made up s..t.! Now, there are witnesses who contradict her version of her "alleged tense altercation of the tarmac with the president." Once again,Gov Brewer is telling bald faced lies. And have you listened to her throughout the day?....She is describing more and more details of this tense altercation...maybe tomorrow she will be saying she was assaulted. But, heh, she has become the hero of the right, an overnight sensation, because this poor, misunderstood public servant stood up to the big bad mean bully President. Absolutely pathetic!

What is so funny is that people like Brewer are so obviously afraid of anything foreign or minority in this country they lose all inhibitions and can't control themselves.

Yet, they have no problem going to eat at Hispanic restaurants, go after men and women from varying minority groups, dance to their music, enjoy all the customs and cultural aspects of those groups.

Yet, when it comes to intrapersonal interaction on an equal level with cultures people?

You'd think they were handed a poisonous serpent and asked to kiss it.

      Ignorant, intolerant hypocrites.

Isn't she a supporter of randomly stopping "suspected illegal immigrants"?

My Uncle lives in Scottsdale, they love it too, but it's not because of the government. He says McStumpy needs to be impeached.

Brewer is a radical disgrace; just to think this sun bathing dried out mackerel point a finger at the president and get away with it and then lying about being almost attacked by the president is a total and laughable disgrace. How much more evidence do the people of Arizona need that their Gov. is one sick crack pot.

As one news personalities stated yesterday...roll the video of Jan going before the camera describing the prior meeting she had with President Obama; she said it and he was very cordial. Now to write just the opposite in her book, was a total lie. She had the nerve to want to meet with him again and she calls him thin skinned when he confronts her about it, it's bs!! Then she goes on the media rounds and promotes her unprofessional and ill-mannered behavior and the RWNJ blogs cheers...yea let's encourage bad behavior!!

She's a tacky and ugly woman and I wish Michelle was there to beat her azz!!!

Michele could have leveled her with just one withering look. She would not have to get physical.

I forgot the name of the movie, but every time I see this it reminds me of Chris Rock in the movie where he's President and Robin Givens keeps harassing him.
