An Israeli Arab man has admitted locking his daughter, now 20, in a bathroom for nine years in their West Bank home, feeding her leftovers and letting her out only at night.

The woman's father cited a "family dispute" as the reason he imprisoned her behind a locked, heavy metal door,

Balraa Melhem was given only a blanket, a radio and a razor blade by her father, who encouraged her to kill herself

Melhem told the social worker her father initially locked her up because he said he wanted to protect her from the world outside, describing other people as "animals

Locked up from age 11 to 20 y/o What was he thinking, and if he was feeding her left overs, who was cooking? Didn't anyone try to find her in all those years?

Some people don't use the brain God gave them for anything nearly as positive and useful as they should. I don't believe he was thinking clearly at all.

Maybe so, so that's why he needs to be locked in the same place for the next 20 years as Shuklack stated above. He needs to have nothing else to do but think.

Just out of curiosity, Dear Rescue, why did you highlight just Arab and not Israeli as well?

Im surprised the mother never asked to see her daughter?

Rani,

I didn't highlight it, it was a copy and paste from the article, and it was highlighted there. I, personally wouldn't have highlighted either. I agree. I wonder where the mother was, or why someone didn't step in earlier. It was her aunt that turned him in.

BTW, it's good to hear from you again. ((((Rani)))))

(((((RESCUE)))) How are you doing?! I msged you on chat a few days ago. Hope you are doing well and having a speedy recovery!

As per the mother, I have a feeling she might not have been allowed to see her since it was the Court that granted custody to the father. Remember the court system of the US is entirely different.

Still in cardiac rehab, Rani, with only intermittent wireless signal. Between that and therapies I not on a lot but the Vine is great for detracting from the discomfort...I'm mending day by day :)

I understand the court system is different than ours. Would love to know how her aunt discovered it.

I read about this somewhere last week. Supposedly, the only thing that kept her sane was the radio and she was able to keep current on what was happening in the world. Sorry it happened, but at least now she's been rescued. Hope the father is prosecuted fully.

Melhem told the social worker her father initially locked her up because he said he wanted to protect her from the world outside, describing other people as "animals," the social worker said.

The only animal was this @!$%#. As a father, I can't even wrap my head around this story. To even contemplate doing something this horrible to your own child makes me feel queezy. This guy should be locked up tight for the rest of his natural life.

The radio may have kept her sane by keeping her up to date on the news, but I wonder about the degree of psychological and emotional damage will show up later on. So sad.

rescuedogs62 - I wonder if she'll ever be able to fully get over the emotional trauma, claustaphobia or be able to trust again. I just hope for her recovery. Sickening what so-called human beings will do to each other, and even their own family members. Thanks for posting.

Maybe it's me, but I just can't come to grips with the mentality of the folks in the middle east who firmly believe that abuse of anyone, especially family members, is OK. Way too many stories have been posted to support my thoughts. Why??

It's because us "western devils" see much of the world with an open mind, as opposed to the closed minds of much of the middle eastern culture. Their minds are kept closed by their leadership - leadership that desires to keep them from knowing truth - because truth is power. Leadership that tells lies and falsehoods in order to scare them into following.

Surprised - lets see, Middle East, Arab - I'd say it's a safe bet that this background is strong Muslim and the things his father, his family, his imam and his society taught him all pretty much were major contributors to his behavior, which is quite inhumane from our point of view.

    fst, Chief,

, but I just can't come to grips with the mentality of the folks in the middle east

It's easy to see this behavior coming from "them" which allows us to feel superior, but I can't tell you the number of articles I've seeded in the last several months where the situation was as bad or worse, happening right here in the good USA, by good ol WASPs.

Just one, the mother and boy friend who kept their handicapped son in a chicken coop in his own filth, and finally nailed it shut and left town, without anyone knowing.

Depravity and cruelty aren't exclusive to the Middle East.

Rani- It doesn't say he is muslim, I inferred it and don't care if you think I'm wrong, the behavior fits with a good portion of the paranoid thinking of extreme muslim beliefs. I'm not PC, I call it like I see it and will not offer any apologies.
Rescue dogs - I never said we were superior or they were inferior. We all know we have our share of nut jobs here. My inference was towards the controlling nature of many (not just limited to the middle east but quite prevalent there) that lie and deceive to maintain control by keeping followers ignorant of the truth.

    1. First of all, as a Muslim from the wealthy, peaceful Arabian Gulf, I would like to say I am DISGUSTED by this filthy scumbag and the way he treated his daughter, that is no way to treat ANYONE! He deserves to go to jail for 9 years and see how he likes it! Sick and twisted!

    2. I must point out that this "Israeli Arab" is actually a Palestinian and Palestinians are NOT Arabs! Theres no such thing as Israeli Arabs because Arab means someone that is geographically from, has the culture of, and the race of the Arabian Peninsula. Palestine/Israel is neither of those therefore not Arab. Real Arabs are from the Arabian Gulf like United Arab Emirates (Dubai), Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

    3. His actions were TOTALLY against Islam. Islam is based on the Quran and the Quran says DO NOT TREAT WOMEN HARSHLY and also DO NOT DO ANYTHING AGAINST THEIR WILL! So this piece of trash is disobeying the Quran IF HE EVEN DARES to claim he is Muslim!

Women are treated like princesses in the Arabian Gulf by TRUE Muslims, they can go out whenever they want, go to the malls and buy themselves Gucci, Fendi, etc and they go with their friends whenever they want and they go to Universities and drive nice cars, especially in Dubai! My own wife can testify to that!

4:19 O ye who believe! It is not lawful for you forcibly to inherit the women (of your deceased kinsmen), nor (that) ye should put constraint upon them that ye may take away a part of that which ye have given them, unless they be guilty of flagrant lewdness. But consort with them in kindness, for if ye hate them it may happen that ye hate a thing wherein Allah hath placed much good.

      ------------------------------------------------

O ye who believe! ye are forbidden to inherit women against their will. Nor should ye treat them with harshness that ye may take away part of the dower ye have given them except where they have been guilty of open lewdness; on the contrary live with them on a footing of kindness and equity. If ye take a dislike to them it may be that ye dislike a thing and Allah brings about through it a great deal of good.

It seems to me that it is talking about taking a woman who belonged to a relative or friend who had died. " Do not take her by force" unless she had been promiscuous. (Does that mean that she can be taken by force, or she's not to be taken) either way, it seems that she is being treated as property.

The owner of a dog dies, "please take care of it, and treat it kindly"

The "family dispute" was probably more about the divorce between the parents than anything this girl could have done wrong at the age of 11. In this sick ba$tard's mind, he thought he would get even with the mother by abusing their daughter.

Which brings me to where the @#$% has the mother been ALL these years?

Poor girl, I hope she will be able to create a new life for herself. One filled with happiness and contentment...
